Our Editorial Principles
Every piece of content on WikEst — including calculators, guides, and market explainers — is guided by four core principles:
- Independence. Our content is written for readers, not advertisers or data partners. We do not accept payment to alter research or conclusions.
- Accuracy. Claims are cross-checked against primary sources before publication. When data conflicts, we favor the most recent, peer-reviewed, or government-published source.
- Transparency. Every major statement of fact cites its source. Calculators document the formulas they use. Corrections are published publicly when errors are found.
- Clarity. Real estate and mortgage topics can be dense. We write for a general U.S. audience, avoiding unnecessary jargon and explaining technical terms when they first appear.
Content Creation Standards
Every new article, guide, or calculator page follows a structured development process before it goes live:
1. Topic Selection
Topics are chosen based on actual questions U.S. homeowners, buyers, and investors are asking — not what is trendy. We prioritize high-intent, decision-oriented searches over broad informational queries.
2. Source Research
Writers gather data from primary U.S. government agencies, industry associations, and reputable research institutions before drafting. Sources are recorded in a private research log so that claims can be verified during the fact-check process.
3. First Draft
Articles are drafted by qualified members of our research team. The lead author's name, professional background, and publication date are displayed on every article. If a guest contributor is involved, their affiliation is disclosed at the top of the piece.
4. Internal Fact-Check
A second editor independently verifies every numeric claim, formula, and citation in the draft. The fact-checker does not know the writer's identity during this process. Drafts that fail verification are returned for revision rather than published.
5. Legal & Compliance Review
All articles covering financial, mortgage, or real estate decision topics pass through a compliance review to make sure they do not cross U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance on personalized financial advice. No WikEst article tells a reader what they "should" do with their money.
Fact-Check Process in Detail
Our fact-checkers verify:
- That every statistic or number matches its cited source and is not out of date.
- That calculator formulas are consistent with standard industry definitions and are labeled clearly.
- That any historical comparison uses inflation-adjusted figures where appropriate.
- That claims about mortgage products, tax treatment, or legal procedures do not contradict current U.S. federal or state guidance.
- That charts, tables, and data visualizations are labeled with their source and publication year.
Data Updates & Review Cycles
WikEst is a living publication. Our content is reviewed on a regular schedule:
- Mortgage rate pages: Reviewed weekly and updated whenever the Freddie Mac PMMS publishes a new rate.
- Housing market guides: Reviewed monthly for new NAR, Zillow, or Census Bureau data.
- Tax and legal content: Reviewed whenever U.S. tax laws or regulatory guidance change, or at minimum annually.
- Calculators: Formula logic and default values are audited quarterly. Formula changes are documented in the calculator's changelog.
Author Qualifications
Writers and editors working on WikEst must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Active or former real estate industry professional (agent, broker, appraiser, or mortgage loan originator) with verifiable U.S. licensing history.
- Holder of a graduate degree in finance, economics, urban planning, or a related field from an accredited U.S. institution.
- Working journalist with a track record of published real estate or finance coverage in a reputable U.S. outlet.
Author bios, including qualifications, are displayed on every article and are available on request via our contact form.
Corrections & Errata
If a reader identifies an error in a WikEst article or calculator, we take it seriously. Corrections are handled as follows:
- The report is reviewed within two business days.
- If the report is valid, the error is corrected and a note is appended to the article detailing what changed and when.
- Material errors (incorrect numbers, misleading claims) are also flagged on our homepage and About page for 30 days.
- The reporter is contacted with a summary of the action taken unless they requested anonymity.
Conflicts of Interest Disclosure
WikEst maintains a formal conflicts-of-interest policy for all staff and contributors. Any writer with a personal, financial, or professional relationship to a company, product, or investment discussed in an article must disclose it at the bottom of the piece. We do not publish articles where the author's conflict could reasonably call their independence into question.
